Friday Facebook Tip: The RSVP

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Wow, I just learned a new trick myself. It seems that a while back one of my  friends would check out my facebook events to see which I was attending so she knew which ones she might want to go to.

What a brilliant idea. With so many to choose from, hang out with the people you would like to connect with. When you take a peek at what your friends are attending you can find out where the action is. It’s also a great way to research ahead of time to see who may be in the room when you get there.

I have to add another tip for the event planner. On Facebook people just hit something so they can clear events out of their inbox. Facebook RSVP quick reference guide: NO means NO, MAYBE means NO, and YES means NO at least 70% of the time. Plan food accordingly.

Thanks @BetsyRackliffe for the first part of the tip!

What is the best way for a small business to utilize Facebook?

Friday, February 26th, 2010

What can a company expect to benefit from Facebook?

There are many ways to utilize facebook. Creating a fan page is a must for a business, though a personal profile is going to be visited more and is much more dynamic. There are events, groups, discussion boards and more available on Facebook, as well as the ability to import your blog feed, Tweets from Twitter, Videos from YouTube and more.

Again, you must think about your objective with the site. What do you hope to do, or accomplish? Who do you want to meet? Are you reinforcing the relationship that you already have with people. When you determine the WHY, you can determine HOW best to reach and interact with your audience.

How do you keep personal social media separate from business?

Friday, February 19th, 2010

This will depend on your mission for participating in social media. If you are an entrepreneur, your social media sites should reflect you as one person, with different interests. Your personal and your business life are probably overlapping anyway, so your social media presence will too. Share some glimpses of your personality in your posts, and create an online persona. This does not mean that you should release all of your personal details, or air anything that is too personal online. Why would you want to share too much online anyway? Even when people think something is private, whether a direct message to someone, via email, or only visible to friends online, anything you put into this electronic media is available online, forever. Before you hit publish or send consider that you are taking out a billboard on the interstate. Does your message pass the test?

If a company is developing a social media strategy, they may be tempted to create a presence for the company. Consider how you feel when you read a message from XYZ Company, versus one from Jane, the marketing director. Any message that comes from a person is way more personal, and we’ll be more inclined to listen. Visit Facebook or Twitter. Look around. How do you feel when reading posts from a company? Let your response be the judge, and then ask your customers what they want. At the very least, a company needs representatives blogging and posting. Share a bio of each of the contributing individuals. Create a company persona and then let us meet the individuals in that company. It’s a must.

Fantastic Friday Facebook Tip

Friday, February 5th, 2010

Welcome to fantastic Friday Facebook Tips. Each Friday we will be releasing a hint or tip designed to help you get the most out of your Facebook social media experience. Make sure to subscribe to our blog via the RSS button to the side of these posts so you don’t miss a day. We welcome your comments as well!

Facebook Tip #1

Use a good profile picture. Do not use one of your kids, your dog, you in a group, or a sunset. If you are using Facebook for business, you need to make it easy for people to recognize you. The purpose is creating relationships with people, and we don’t form relationships with stuff, we form them with people. So many people I have seen use a half of their face, or something meant to be cutesy. Do you want cutesy or do you want something that will benefit you long term?

Taking artistic license to what Tom Harris (xn Marketing) has previously said, “Heaven forbid that someone should find you (and recognize you) on Facebook, because they might be reminded why they needed to call or email and do business with you, and what a hassle that would be.”

How is your profile picture representing you?
