It’s about Quality

We have all grown up in a world where we were constantly advertised to.  We have been assaulted by promotional messages from every possible angle at all hours of day and night, screaming at us to “buy their stuff”.  And we’re tired of it.  We’ve been tired of it for decades now, but until recently we had no choice.

But the revolution has arrived.  Now we (consumers) are tuning out the screamers.  We’re now in control.  We decide what we want, and we seek it out, rather than having it shoved in our faces.  Not all advertisers have woke up to this fact, but they will.  In the meantime, we (businesses) who are aware of this need to once and for all stop advertising.  If we don’t like being screamed at, then we must stop screaming at others.  The age of “Buy My Stuff” is gone, and the age of relationships is here.  The age of quantity (how many readers does this magazine or newspaper have, or how many people watch this TV show) is gone, and the age of quality is here (how many people do I have on my list who Know, Like and Trust me?).  We can no longer afford to “blast” a message out to the masses, and hope that a few people will see it and buy something from us.  Now we must reduce the number of people who hear our message and increase the depth and quality of the relationships we have with those people.

Mindshare (another’s awareness of you) can be fleeting, which is what traditional advertising usually achieved, or it can be sustained, which is what deeper and higher quality relationships achieve.
Build your list.  Nurture your list.  Talk to your list.  Care for your list.  And they’ll end up buying your stuff.  And it will start to become effortless on your part.

A new local venue: Studio West – Site of the InSights Holiday Party 2011!

For those of you who have been anxiously awaiting the release of the top secret location for the InSights holiday party – it’s been announced. You see, there were lights in a window in what used to be vacant warehouse space behind Bagger Dave’s in downtown Brighton last week. I saw the lights – set up in what looked to be a gallery – and I was intrigued!

Being curious, as I was walking past the night of the Holiday Glow, I stopped in – and sure enough! It is a newly designed space featuring an art gallery…

Studio West, a Work Skills Corporation venture provides people with disabilities and others we serve with an opportunity to express their artistic abilities by creating artwork in a multitude of mediums and then taking pride in selling their art.

The Studio West interior is the perfect location for us to celebrate our holiday cheer. All are welcome at this open event. Please RSVP here!

Donations and proceeds to benefit the Angel Entrepreneur fund sponsored by the InSights Collaboratory non-profit organization, supporting the entrepreneurial vision at all ages.

Donations will also support the memorial fund of Phil Zyskowksi , a friend of InSights who passed away suddenly earlier this month, and leave a wife and two small boys behind. Phil did all of the production work on the InSights CD’s – and most recently my recording of the Science of Getting Rich. An amazing individual, we spent hours together working on our projects and he spent many more listening to and refining our voices – which in itself is humbling. Hugs to his family – he will be missed.

(Brighton, MI) – Hollywood stars mingled with socially conscious entrepreneurs at a gala fundraiser in Hollywood last week, and two local Brighton business owners were on the red carpet. Sandi Maki and Al Curtis, owners of Legendary Escapes Pools and founders of the Insights Group, attended the 5th annual “Rock the Kasbah” event, and met hosts Richard and Eve Branson. More than $600,000 was raised at the event to support the efforts of the Eve Branson Foundation and Virgin Unite, two non-profits working for social change via economic opportunities. Maki and Curtis are well-known in Livingston County for their social networking and business development work, where they not only run their own successful businesses, but invest their time and efforts to help other area entrepreneurs build their dreams. Their invitation to the event helps build exposure for SE Michigan and the vibrant business mindset that is continuing to build here.

Embrace the reaper

Death is a crucial part of life. Without it we wouldn’t be motivated to do much of anything… or at least do it in a timely fashion. Some of us are motivated by death, some of us are motivate by money, some pride, some fear. Motivation beyond that of survival remains responsible for all progress created by the human race. Most of society does not consider their motivation when choosing their work life. Today most of us work with money as our motivation, that new house, car payment, utility bill and so on being the motivation for making money.

So if we work because we are motivated by making money, why would we feel the need to create work that is great? Most workers can get away with doing “just enough”, and they will get their salary as promised. This makes it hard to grow a successful business. Now,  if we were motivated by something else besides money, perhaps we would be more exited about the work we do.

I myself am motivated by the opportunity to create my work. My motivation for money is only so that I can use it to create more of my work. I’m a minimalist, I spend more than I have by giving it to others, I buy what I want before what I need, I make bulk purchases that don’t make any sense, and somehow the world has not ended and I’m still going on.

Money always comes when you need it if you really want it. If you just want it to have it… you may be waiting for awhile. My purchases get exponentially larger, the ability to get it… easier and easier. Perhaps this is because I am motivated by the ability to create great things… doing so by influencing the motivation of others. Great businesses are grown by the ability to change motivation in others. More growth, more wealth.

So what is the summary of all of this? Well, if you create a situation where your employees are motivated by the work they do rather than the money they make. Your wealth, their wealth, your business and your ability to create, will be exponentially easier and greater. How did I figure these things out? Well because I’m motivated by the greatest motivator of all… death. Upon death I will no longer have the ability to create and all that is left of me will be the things I created. You can’t really say the same about money. If all you have is money when you die… who will know that you have truly lived? Maybe you’re family, but not the world, and most importantly; not yourself.

How about writing a little book?

I mean a really little book; like 3.5″ x 5″.  They’re called “minibuks”, and you can get them at http://www.minibuk.com.  They’re super cute, inexpensive, and attention-getting.

Inexpensive? Yes, a 96 page, perfect-bound minibuk costs only $2.24 each in quantities of 250 (the minimum quantity).

Sell them, give them away, your choice.  But if you want to write and self-publish a book, this is one quick and painless way to do it.

All minibuks are black-and-white inside with a full-color cover.  Binding is either perfect-bound (must be minimum 64 pages, and can be over 200 pages), or saddle-stitched (maximum 48 pages).

I have not utilized this service yet (just discovered it yesterday), but the process looks super simple.

Imagine being able to drop a  cute little book that YOU wrote into the hands of a client or prospect, and it only cost you a couple of bucks?  Think that might set you apart?

Get all the details at http://www.minibuk.com.
