So I was watching television with my 4 year old Molly the other day and right at the good part, commercials took over. She turned around in my lap and said “Are you kidding me!! I don’t want to see these commercials. Dad, why do we have to watch this?” Well, as a good father, I said “we don’t”, and I promptly changed the channel to another kids show.
Which brings me to my point; Not that many years ago we were forced to watch commercials because we didn’t have many stations to flip to, but today it’s endless. So why is it that we still tolerate interruptive advertising? Do we believe that we have no choice? Or is it that we really really enjoy them? Or maybe we just would rather feel victomized by the system because we can’t control our own destinys?
I think that the world of social media will finally wake up the sleeping masses from the social dream that says that we must all be the victim of interruptive advertisers. As the world shifts to consumer driven marketing and consumer driven content, we ,as a collective people, will learn to conrol our own input material. Social media is the first step in a long list of things that will make this possible!
This is what we think about interruptive advertising!

Roger Burnett says:
Ah yes….thank goodness for the DVR. We have to assume that the next step will be subscription-based television without the advertising, right?
Anne Curtis says:
Rock on Molly! My sentiments exactly!
Monica says:
Dear Al!
Your daughter is brilliant! (Of course) There are a few shows for which I put up with the commercials, but most of the time I am watching TCM – Turner Classic Movies. 1) NO commercial interruptions. 2) The only advertising is for their program guide and movies. 3) Most movies are G or PG. 4) Most movies are from a time when the young man/woman left home to see the world with what we now consider an overnight bag.
Very soon I will probably lose this access, but I am already prepared with my Library card!
Sleep is good too.
