Networking = not actually selling anything

Networking: We’ve learned in the business community that it’s very important to get out and meet people and network with them. But are we ever really taught what networking is? It’s not about selling. It’s about simply introducing yourself to people. I can talk someone into buying something from me, but that’s one sale. Or I can talk with them about what their needs are and about who and what I am, and if I can get them to talk to other people, I can potentially sell a whole lot more. So networking is not about selling; networking is simply introducing yourself to people and getting people to talk about you.

I disagree. Networking is building paths and roads to customers you’ve never even considered. This is by selling yourself… that you have integrity, resources, smarts, and drive. People you meet will buy that you are a good resource for them and sell you to others to further their connections. It’s all about selling the intangibles.
