Think of using social media like you are at a party. You don’t actually sell anything. Social media strategy, if done well, means you are getting involved in conversations, so that people can learn about you, and you can learn about other people.
If you are going to take this time to get people to learn about you, but you are not sell them anything, why would they listen to what you have to say?
Traditional marketing has followed a different path. Using social media, we want people to talk about who and what we are, so that when the buying process comes up, the buying cycle and such when they need your service, they remember you.
All roads in social media lead to your home. Home is where the conversion happens from looker to buyer.
What are you doing with your social media strategy to send people to your home?

I agree completely. I am so tired of the constant barrage of “buy me” ads on twitter, facebook, etc. I want to know the substance of a person…I want to know THEM.
