You’ve heard us say it before…

Most marketing textbooks are referred to at InSights as historical reference novels, even those written in 2008. Don’t take our word for it, see what Seth Godin has to say about it as well…Textbook Rant.

We’ve shared with people who have been to any of our talks on marketing and methods that information changes, daily. It seems like there is so much to keep up with, where does someone need to start to be able to take it all in?

Depending on your company, and you industry, you should look, listen, and read, daily. Subscribe to blogs on your product, service or subject. Check in to see what the buzz is about. Pay attention to emerging trends. Things change so quickly, anyone who professes to be an “expert” on marketing or social media probably isn’t. What we have and need are people who pay attention and are continually looking for new information.

Our programs all center around the concept of Organic Marketing (TM). Can you make the connection between the name and the trends?

What are your favorite ways to stay in the game, short of studying textbooks?

I remain in the game by reading blogs daily. Seth Godin is a hot topic and a must read. I have bookmarked certain blogs by category so I can go read ten or so daily.

Other ways I stay current is by http://www.bing.com searches for interesting things like leadership, teamwork, personal development, and screenwriting.

God bless Seth. I have a young friend enrolled in marketing at MSU and she hasn’t heard of Seth Godin. I purchased Tribes for her birthday; she’s smart. She’ll get it. But what about the other kids? Here’s hoping their prof’s read Seth’s blog, too.

  3. Checking out the websites for my supplies is often educational and fun. They are also in the position of staying with it or losing market-share.

Thanks Spencer. Seth Godin is one of our favorites. I read about 8 blogs, and check in on Twitter and look for interesting links on Facebook. There are always new and exciting things to pay attention to!

Patty, pat on the back for sharing Tribes with the marketing student you know. I was intrigued to read about Seth’s MBA program. I am sure that his students learned so much more than could be taught in “traditional” methods. I think we are finding that in marketing today tradition is out and innovation is in!
