Friday Facebook Tip: How much time does the average business spend each day on social networking?

This depends on whether they have a plan, a strategy, or just hang out. There is a lot of shiny stuff online. These would be the games you can play on Facebook. It can also be the links that you follow on Twitter just because you are curious.

There are different opinions on how much time you should spend on each aspect of social media.  Anywhere from half your time reading and listening to even more than that.

If you take the time to plan up front, strategize what your objective is and work towards that goal. With automation tools available there are a lot of time saving techniques to get your message out and then allow you to check in when you have the time.

For a larger company, there may be an opportunity to develop one strategy and then share the responsibility among many people to get it accomplished.

What are your favorite time planning methods for handling social media?

Is a social media strategy time consuming and overwhelming?

Social media can be overwhelming. There are thousands of social media sites that you can get involved with, but there are just a few that you really need to become very familiar with early on. We teach, at the Insights Group, to lean into the process. Pick one that makes sense for you. Learn about it. Become actively involved in it. And then from there, build profiles on several other sites. But start small; you don’t have to change the world today, but you will impact your world by becoming involved and doing the proper things which do require that strategy.

How many hours a week would I need to spend…

to keep my business Facebook and Twitter site up and fresh?

I would try to touch each of these sites at least daily, if not several times a day. You want to start with blogging, which can automatically update each of the sites.

Check in with your profile. Update events that you will be attending. Share thoughts of things that you have done today. You can update via your cell phone while you are out and on the road.

The best part of social media is that you can decide when to check in and which sites. The rest can be working for you even when you are not there. What time of day and day of the week should you be most active? It depends on who your audience is, and who needs to see your updates. Let us know if we can help you strategize on what will be best for you, and how much time you should be spending on social media.
